This was a great weekend for the Dragons with mostly wins – from the young new Under 10s to the grizzled Firsts:
The Firsts beat Harrow United 3-1 at home. A very pleasing result. This was a mostly comfortable contest with the Dragons strong in defensive and solid when attacking, despite a host of missed chances that should have lead to a bigger score.
The Blues had no game.
The Old Dragonians lost 1-4 away to Hearts of Teddlothian in the Cup. This was not the result the Old Ds wanted as they looked to get past Hearts who are in a different Division. There were some good take-aways but a disappointment after the two previous resounding wins.
The U15 Girls beat Barnet Panthers 7-2 away. This was one of those games that gets going right from the off – after just half an hour there had already been four goals. The Dragons went into half time 4-2 up, determined not to concede any more goals and to increase their own lead. A big result for the Dragons that extends their unbeaten run to three games.
The U13 Girls just lost 1-2 to St Josephs on the Scrubs. The Dragons played downhill in the first half but just could not score whilst St Josephs did – uphill. With half time over it looked like St Joseph’s might romp home down the hill to score more but the Dragons defence held firm, and it was the Dragons who did the scoring to make it 1-1. Rather cruelly, in the very last minute, St Joseph’s scored to scrape a win. This was a sound start for the Dragons who will get better.
The U11 Girls and the U16 Girls had no games.
The New U10s beat Ickenham 5-0 away. This was an absolutely fantastic performance from the newest Dragons team who had not played a match before. They moved the ball effectively and worked together as a unit. The Dragons goalie proved superb at the back pulling off some amazing saves.
The New U11 Boys beat St Josephs 3-0 away. A strong performance from the young Dragons as they showed maturity beyond their years to take their chances in front of goal and deny their opponents any opportunity to do the same.
The U12 Boys beat Harrow United 2-1 at home on penalties in the Middlesex Trophy. Although the Dragons were underdogs compared to Harrow United who play in a higher division, one would never have guessed from the way they played. With the Dragons 0-1 down, the overzealous Harrow gave the Dragons the opportunity to draw level from the penalty spot to leave it 1-1 at the end of normal time. A dramatic shootout followed with the Dragons holding their nerve to win.
The U13 Boys home match against Harrow St Marys was awarded to the Dragons as HsM could not field a team.
The U14 Boys Red lost 3-5 away at Pinner United. The Dragons travelled out along the A40 looking to storm historic rivals Pinner United’s castle. The Dragons started well but for some unfathomable reason rather crumpled later on.
The U14 Boys White beat London Athletic 2-1 at home. The Dragons showed it’s never over till it’s over. Despite dominating and creating numerous chances, the Dragons found themselves behind with LA’s only venture into their area. The second half was more of the same with the Dragons wasteful in front of goal. Then, the Dragons equalised through an own goal – yet still a goal. But there was more drama to come as in Fergie time, the Dragons centre half ran 50 yards with the ball, shot and saw it fly into the top corner.
The U15 Boys beat St Joseph’s ’88 2-1 at home in the Middlesex Cup. A great game from the Dragons under the stewardship of a new Coach who guided the squad to beat a team two divisions up from them. A solid day’s work.
The U16 Boys beat London Capital 4-3 at ‘away’ but played at LCS. This was the most exciting of matches marred a little by the immature behaviour of some adults. The underlying problem was that the London Capital coach was running his team by himself and oscillated from reasonableness to an over noisy belligerent engagement. The players from both sides got on with the match and played exciting football. The Dragons slipped to 0-2 down and then clawed their way back to win in the last five minutes. This really was a great performance from the Dragons.
The U17 Boys away match against Belmont Bees was awarded to the Dragons as the Bees could not raise a team.
