Pitshanger 1 v 8 Kensington Dragons U14B Eagles
We’ve been threatening to do this for some time – and after a tough season in which our commitment to style and imagination had too often been bludgeoned by our opposition’s dedication to the aerial game, here it was: an 8-1 victory away to a spirited but ultimately overwhelmed Pitshanger FC.
We started well, passing, moving, thinking our way forward – but our boys still kept us waiting: would this be another promising game lost to the opponents’ big man up front? Luckily they didn’t have one and once the first sure shot found the net the Eagles spread their wings and provided a great feast of fast, creating, attacking football.
There was time for the coach to experiment with three at the back in the second half (handy for the challenges ahead) and when Pitshanger scored from the kick-off at 5-0 down there was an invaluable reminder of how to keep your head when things seem, unusually, to be going so well.
So as we made our way back East in the early Autumn afternoon there was time to reflect on a great win, well deserved, built on a fresh centre-back pairing that is surely the finest this side of the Hanger Gyratory. There will be tougher tests this term, for sure, but something else is certain too: there’s a sense in the Eagles’ camp that we might just be starting to fly.
